Apart from a healthy lifestyle, we also need to make sure what are we putting onto our skin and how are we taking care of it. Now a days, Skin Care is often complicated and perceived as something quite expensive. But skin care doesn’t have to be expensive or time consuming. There are simple, affordable and minimalistic ways to obtain healthy, glowing skin. Coming to the most minimalistic approach of Skin Care, CTM Routine is the most common. CTM stands for Cleansing, Toning and Moisturizing; it is the most basic yet effective way to healthy skin. It is different for different skin types. If you are not sure of your skin type, you can refer my previous post on ‘Determine your Skin Type.
Let me start by introducing you to the CTM Method.
CTM METHOD
Cleansing is the first and foremost step of any skin care routine. The purpose is to remove dirt, oil, bacteria and makeup from the skin; ensuring that the pores aren’t clogged. A good cleanser cleanses the skin without leaving it dry. Some cleansers (like foam, oil, gel cleansers) are massaged onto the skin and then washed off while others (micellar water) are used with cotton pads.
Toning is the most underrated step of the skincare regimen. It is a very important step especially for all the only skin types out there. A simple toner if used regularly can do wonders to one’s skin. It not only restore the oil-water balance and the pH level of the skin but also tighten the pores. It removes everything a cleanser missed, thereby making it easier for skin to absorb other products (moisturizers in this case). Toners are applied using a cotton pad (or cotton ball). You can also pat it on the skin afterwards for more absorption.
Moisturizing is the step in which we feed our skin with nutrients like vitamins, essential oils, plant extracts, antioxidants, etc improvising the texture of the skin. As the name suggests, it prevents moisture loss from the skin thereby keeping it hydrated. Regular moisturizing can not only lead to supple skin but can also delay the signs of aging. Moisturizers are applied in circular motions.
CTM METHODS FOR DIFFERENT SKIN TYPES
OILY SKIN
C: Foam-based cleansers works the best for oily skin since it contains less oil and doesn’t leave the skin dry. Look for ingredients like Salicylic acid, charcoal, etc.
T: Use an alcohol-free toner and look for ingredients like witch hazel, apple cider vinegar, tea tree oil, green tea extracts, etc.
M: Oily skin have low moisture content but very high oil content. One common mistake that people with oily skin type makes is that they don’t moisturize enough, which worsen the situation. It’s because lack of moisturisation can influence the sebaceous glands to produce more oil thereby making the condition worse. Use a gel or water (lotion) based moisturiser or a serum which has a light texture and low oil levels; it’ll will moisturise and also keep the shine under control. Look for ingredients like Aloe Vera, tea tree oil, neem, turmeric, etc. Make sure the product is non-comedogenic.
DRY SKIN
C: Look for a Cream or Oil based Cleanser or Balm which will remove all the dirt and makeup and keep the skin hydrated after.
T: A viscous, hydrating toner would work for dry skin. Look for ingredients like Vitamin E, chamomile, hyaluronic acid, glycerin, etc.
M: Dry skin lacks both moisture and oil so a thick moisturizer with a cream based consistency is recommended. Look for ingredients like Vitamin E, Vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, glycerin, shea butter, etc.
COMBINATION SKIN
C: A mild foam based cleanser would work perfectly for a combination skin type. Avoid harsh irritants like sulphates, parabens, alcohol, etc.
T: A balancing toner would work for a combination skin. Look for ingredients like Aloe Vera, rose water, rosemary, antioxidants, etc.
M: Look for serums that are light weight with good moisture content and a good water-oil balance. Look for ingredients like jojoba oil, honey, etc. Since, combination skin has oily T-zone and dry U-zone, make sure to pat the product on the T-zone and apply twice the amount on the rest of the face.
SENSITIVE SKIN
C: Use a very gentle non-toxic, vegan face wash or you could simply use Micellar water. Make sure it doesn’t have any scrub particles. Look for natural ingredients and avoid harsh ingredients like parabens, synthetic fragrances, mineral oil, sulfates, phthalates, etc as these may cause allergies.
T: Look for a calming toner with natural ingredients like Aloe Vera, rose water, etc.
M: You could always do a patch test before buying the product. Here’s what you need to do; use a cotton swab to make an “X” on your neck. If it leaves redness, you’re sensitive to that product or the ingredient(s) in it. Look for hypoallergenic, fragrance-free ingredients like Aloe Vera, rose, honey, etc. Use gentle moisturizers or serums containing ceramide, glycerin, etc to strengthen the skin outer barrier. Avoid the use of strong essential oils since it can lead to irritation.
