BASICS OF SKIN CARE

Apart from a healthy lifestyle, we also need to make sure what are we putting onto our skin and how are we taking care of it. Now a days, Skin Care is often complicated and perceived as something quite expensive. But skin care doesn’t have to be expensive or time consuming. There are simple, affordable and minimalistic ways to obtain healthy, glowing skin. Coming to the most minimalistic approach of Skin Care, CTM Routine is the most common. CTM stands for Cleansing, Toning and Moisturizing; it is the most basic yet effective way to healthy skin. It is different for different skin types. If you are not sure of your skin type, you can refer my previous post on ‘Determine your Skin Type.

Let me start by introducing you to the CTM Method.

CTM METHOD

Cleansing is the first and foremost step of any skin care routine. The purpose is to remove dirt, oil, bacteria and makeup from the skin; ensuring that the pores aren’t clogged. A good cleanser cleanses the skin without leaving it dry. Some cleansers (like foam, oil, gel cleansers) are massaged onto the skin and then washed off while others (micellar water) are used with cotton pads.

Toning is the most underrated step of the skincare regimen. It is a very important step especially for all the only skin types out there. A simple toner if used regularly can do wonders to one’s skin. It not only restore the oil-water balance and the pH level of the skin but also tighten the pores. It removes everything a cleanser missed, thereby making it easier for skin to absorb other products (moisturizers in this case). Toners are applied using a cotton pad (or cotton ball). You can also pat it on the skin afterwards for more absorption.

Moisturizing is the step in which we feed our skin with nutrients like vitamins, essential oils, plant extracts, antioxidants, etc improvising the texture of the skin. As the name suggests, it prevents moisture loss from the skin thereby keeping it hydrated. Regular moisturizing can not only lead to supple skin but can also delay the signs of aging. Moisturizers are applied in circular motions.

CTM METHODS FOR DIFFERENT SKIN TYPES

OILY SKIN

C: Foam-based cleansers works the best for oily skin since it contains less oil and doesn’t leave the skin dry. Look for ingredients like Salicylic acid, charcoal, etc.

T: Use an alcohol-free toner and look for ingredients like witch hazel, apple cider vinegar, tea tree oil, green tea extracts, etc.

M: Oily skin have low moisture content but very high oil content. One common mistake that people with oily skin type makes is that they don’t moisturize enough, which worsen the situation. It’s because lack of moisturisation can influence the sebaceous glands to produce more oil thereby making the condition worse. Use a gel or water (lotion) based moisturiser or a serum which has a light texture and low oil levels; it’ll will moisturise and also keep the shine under control. Look for ingredients like Aloe Vera, tea tree oil, neem, turmeric, etc. Make sure the product is non-comedogenic.

DRY SKIN

C: Look for a Cream or Oil based Cleanser or Balm which will remove all the dirt and makeup and keep the skin hydrated after.

T: A viscous, hydrating toner would work for dry skin. Look for ingredients like Vitamin E, chamomile, hyaluronic acid, glycerin, etc.

M: Dry skin lacks both moisture and oil so a thick moisturizer with a cream based consistency is recommended. Look for ingredients like Vitamin E, Vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, glycerin, shea butter, etc.

COMBINATION SKIN

C: A mild foam based cleanser would work perfectly for a combination skin type. Avoid harsh irritants like sulphates, parabens, alcohol, etc.

T: A balancing toner would work for a combination skin. Look for ingredients like Aloe Vera, rose water, rosemary, antioxidants, etc.
M: Look for serums that are light weight with good moisture content and a good water-oil balance. Look for ingredients like jojoba oil, honey, etc. Since, combination skin has oily T-zone and dry U-zone, make sure to pat the product on the T-zone and apply twice the amount on the rest of the face.

SENSITIVE SKIN

C: Use a very gentle non-toxic, vegan face wash or you could simply use Micellar water. Make sure it doesn’t have any scrub particles. Look for natural ingredients and avoid harsh ingredients like parabens, synthetic fragrances, mineral oil, sulfates, phthalates, etc as these may cause allergies.
T: Look for a calming toner with natural ingredients like Aloe Vera, rose water, etc.
M: You could always do a patch test before buying the product. Here’s what you need to do;  use a cotton swab to make an “X” on your neck. If it leaves redness, you’re sensitive to that product or the ingredient(s) in it. Look for hypoallergenic, fragrance-free ingredients like Aloe Vera, rose, honey, etc. Use gentle moisturizers or serums containing ceramide, glycerin, etc to strengthen the skin outer barrier. Avoid the use of strong essential oils since it can lead to irritation.

DETERMINE YOUR SKIN TYPE

Have you ever thought why a product that has worked for someone does not work for you? One of the major reasons could be the difference in skin type. In order to practice an effective skin care regimen and get the maximum benefit, it is important to know your skin type.
Every skin is unique but to make the process easy, skin type has been categorized into four types – Oily, Dry, Combination and Sensitive. Our skin might not fit into a single category. Our skin gets influenced by both external and internal factors. External factors include environmental conditions (pollution, sun exposure), skin care regimen, etc. Internal factors include skin disorders, genetics, hormones, diet, medications, etc.
HOW TO IDENTIFY YOUR SKIN TYPE?
You can follow these three simple steps to identify your skin type:

  1. Start by washing your face.
  2. Leave it in its natural condition and do not apply any product.
  3. Wait for an hour and closely examine your skin.
RESULT SKIN TYPE
1. Tight and a little flaky Dry
2. Shiny and greasy Oily
3. Oily on the T-zone, Dry on rest of the face Combination
4. Itchy, irritated and have a little bit of redness Sensitive

HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR SKIN TYPE?

  1. Dry Skin Type: lacks both water and oil. Dehydration is one of the major causes of dry skin (along with genetics), so drinking water and avoiding diuretics (coffee, alcohol) will help a lot. For products, avoid ingredients like sulphates, benzoyl peroxide, etc and look for ingredients like Hyaluronic acid, Glycerin, Shea Butter, Vitamin E, etc.
  2. Oily Skin Type: is caused due to the overproduction of sebum. Avoid ingredients like Sodium lauryl sulphate and Alcohol in products. Instead, look for ingredients like Vitamin C, Witch Hazel, Tea Tree Oil, etc. If you suffer from acne, products containing Salicylic Acid, Benzoic Acid will be beneficial.
  3. Combination Skin Type: is caused by genes and overproduction of sebum in the T-zone. It can be difficult to treat since it is a mixture of both oily and dry skin. For products, avoid products containing alcohol and other irritants. Look for ingredients like Honey, Lactic acid, Antioxidants, etc.
  4. Sensitive Skin Type: is caused mainly due to genetics and hormonal fluctuations. Avoid harsh ingredients like parabens, synthetic fragrances, mineral oil, sulfates, phthalates, etc as these may lead to allergies. Also, keep scrubbing to the minimum since it’ll cause irritation and redness. Look for ingredients like Aloe Vera, Rose Water extracts, Chamomile, etc in skin care products.

REVIEW: MAYBELLINE DREAM MATTE MOUSSE FOUNDATION

Hi everyone!!
Today I am going to review Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse foundation. Well, this is my first foundation in mousse form; I normally use the liquid ones. I normally use L’Oreal Paris Infallible foundation and I have been using it for more than 2 years. However, when I reached the nearest shop, the salesman told me that L’Oreal’s Infallible foundation was out of stock. Since, I have been using this product for a really long time, I thought of trying a new one for a change.

Having a look at my face/skin type, the lady at the Maybelline counter suggested me this Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse foundation. I tried out the foundation and I really liked the result & loved its formula; it gave a perfect matte finish to my super-oily skin type. So, without any doubt I bought this foundation.

Ingredients of this product

Now let’s start with the review ->

  • Packaging – Its packaging is quite different from the regular ones. It comes in a cute little jar made up of glass. However, the packaging is not hygienic at all since you’ll have to dig your finger inside the jar every time you use it.
  • Texture – It’s smooth, spongy and creamy.
1.5
Texture of the product
  • Coverage – It gives light to medium coverage.
  • Application – You can use a beauty blender, a brush or your fingertips for the application of this foundation. However, for best results, apply evenly to your face and blend it with your fingertips. And, do not forget to use a moisturizer before. Also, you don’t have to use a translucent/compact powder after applying this foundation.
  • About the product – It gives a 100% matte finish. So, if you are looking for a dewy look, this is not the foundation for you. Also, it is ideal for normal to oily skin types. Therefore, if your skin is dry or you have dry patches on it, do not buy this foundation; since it can make your skin look flaky and rough.
  • Staying Power – It stays for about 4 to 5 hours.

These are some pros and cons of this foundation ->

PROS –

  • Good for oily skin types, thereby giving a soft matte finish
  • Travel friendly
  • Affordable
  • Weightless and gives a natural, smooth look
  • Blends well
  • Dermatologically tested

CONS –

  • Not suitable for dry skin types
  • Does not give high coverage
  • Might not suit sensitive skin

Ratings: I would give this product a 3.5/5.

Price: 675 INR.

Overall, this foundation is a good foundation if you have oily, acne-prone skin.
